About the Project

The SHeMS project will produce a structural health monitoring system for aircraft components, such as wing flaps, tail fins and critical structural components. The system will be developed in a modular fashion so that individual parts of the system can be re-used independently.

Technical Objectives:

  • Develop lightweight, flexible acoustic transducers for permanent, or semi-permanent, fixing to aircraft components.
  • Develop acoustic emission technology and equipment for detection of faults in aircraft components.
  • Develop acousto-ultrasonic technology and equipment for locating and determining the size of faults in aircraft components.
  • Develop independent hardware modules capable of operating under their own power via energy harvesting, and communicating wirelessly with a central hub.
