TWI is one of Europe's largest independent RTOs. It has a turnover of £55m and over 500 staff. It is a membership-based organisation with over 3,500 industrial member companies in 65 countries. It is concerned with all aspects of materials joining technology. This includes the structural integrity of welds and other joints and for this reason it has developed a strong and growing NDT group. With involvement in over 60 projects during the last four years, it has accumulated great experience in successful management of collaborative projects, and will be managing the SHeMS project.
The research work in developing the ultrasonic techniques will be carried out by TWI's Validation Centre in Wales and supported by the central NDT, and Long Range Ultrasonics groups based in Cambridge. With investment of over £30 million in NDT research equipment and facilities, TWI has an outstanding platform for the acousto-ultrasonic development work.
